
Get to know Prof Karamat
My Story
Professor Karamat is a consultant and honorary professor in diabetes
and endocrinology at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS
Foundation Trust. He completed his specialist training as an academic
clinical lecturer from University of Birmingham and Health Education
West Midlands and has been a consultant in NHS since 2012.
His clinical areas of interest include role of technology in management of
Type 1 DM as well as antenatal and complex diabetes. He leads the Type
1 Diabetes service and is also joint lead for the regional islet
transplantation services with colleagues from Oxford. His expertise
involves wide breadth of all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology
including metabolic syndrome.
He is actively involved in medical education and is the Training
Programme Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology for Health
Education West Midlands. He has been nominated as one of the national
Diabetes UK Clinical Champions. He is currently the national
recruitment lead for diabetes and endocrinology for UK and local RCP
regional Advisor for West Midlands.
He has been involved in writing reports about health inequalities in
populations across Europe with Diabetes. In addition, he has published
extensively in the field of ethnicity and diabetes, diabetes and
cardiovascular disease and intensive insulin therapy as well as non-
alcoholic fatty liver disease.
