What Is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. Psychiatrists are medically qualified doctors with specialist training in mental health, enabling them to assess both psychological and biological factors contributing to mental illness.

Psychiatric care may include detailed diagnostic assessment, formulation of a treatment plan, medication management where appropriate, and coordination with other healthcare professionals such as psychologists, therapists and GPs.

Our psychiatrists take a holistic, evidence-based approach, ensuring care is tailored to each individual’s symptoms, history, circumstances and goals.

Our Psychiatry Appointments

Initial Psychiatric Assessment

Your first appointment provides a comprehensive psychiatric assessment. The psychiatrist will take a detailed medical and mental health history, explore current symptoms, review any previous diagnoses or treatments and consider relevant physical health factors.

Where appropriate, a clear diagnosis will be discussed and a personalised treatment plan agreed. This may include medication recommendations, psychological therapy referrals or further investigations.

Medication Management and Treatment Planning

For patients where medication is clinically indicated, our psychiatrists provide careful initiation, titration and monitoring of treatment, with clear explanation of benefits, risks and alternatives.

Treatment plans are developed collaboratively, ensuring patients are fully informed and involved in decisions about their care.

Follow-Up and Ongoing Care

Follow-up appointments allow for review of symptoms, response to treatment and any side effects, with adjustments made as needed. Ongoing care focuses on stability, recovery and longer-term mental wellbeing.

Where appropriate, care plans may be shared with your GP to support continuity of care.

At Kingsford Medical Services, we prioritise compassionate care, clinical excellence and clear communication. Our psychiatrists take time to listen, explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly, and work collaboratively with patients.

New Patient Appointment

A first outpatient appointment within our Psychiatry Services provides a comprehensive assessment for patients experiencing mental health symptoms affecting emotional wellbeing, cognition, behaviour or daily functioning.

During this consultation, the psychiatrist will take a detailed psychiatric and medical history, including the onset, nature and progression of symptoms, personal and family mental health history, relevant physical health conditions, current and previous treatments, and any prior assessments or investigations. The assessment will include a structured clinical interview exploring mood, anxiety, thought processes, perception, sleep, appetite, concentration and risk, alongside consideration of social, occupational and psychological factors.

Where clinically indicated, the findings from the assessment will be used to establish a diagnosis and develop a personalised treatment plan. This may include medication recommendations, psychological therapy options, lifestyle and wellbeing advice, or onward referral for further assessment or investigations. All treatment options will be discussed clearly, including expected benefits, risks and alternatives.

This appointment is designed to provide patients with a clear understanding of their mental health condition, contributing factors and treatment options, while establishing an individualised psychiatric management and follow-up plan. It ensures timely access to specialist psychiatric expertise within a confidential, supportive and patient-centred clinical environment.

Follow Up Appointment

A follow-up appointment within our Psychiatry Services provides ongoing specialist review and clinical support to monitor progress, treatment response and overall mental wellbeing.

During this appointment, the psychiatrist will review current symptoms, changes since the previous consultation and the impact on daily functioning. Response to any treatment initiated will be assessed, including effectiveness, tolerability and any side effects where medication has been prescribed. Progress with psychological or other therapeutic interventions, where relevant, will also be discussed, alongside any changes in personal, social or occupational circumstances.

The psychiatric management plan will be refined as required to reflect progress, address ongoing or emerging concerns and optimise outcomes. This may include adjustment of medication, recommendations for additional or alternative therapies, or further advice to support stability and recovery.

This appointment ensures safe and consistent monitoring, supports effective ongoing management and provides patients with the opportunity to discuss any concerns, new or persisting symptoms and receive clear guidance on next steps within their care plan.
